The Cardington Special Test is only available to Approved Driving Instructors (ADI) and can be used as part of your Continued Professional Development (CPD) programme to demonstrate a high standard of driving competence.
The test is carried out at the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) Training Centre in Cardington, Bedfordshire by one of the DSA specialist training staff and is conducted in your own car, which must be:Manual transmissionBe fitted with integral head restraints for the driver and assessor Have an interior instructor mirror for the assessor
During the test you will be driving in a variety of traffic situations on all types of road, including a motorway. Throughout the drive, you will need to demonstrate a
positive, courteous attitude and the ability to control the position and speed of the vehicle safely, in a systematic and smooth style. A high consistent standard of driving competence based on concentration, effective observation, anticipation and planning is expected throughout and in particular, you must demonstrate:Expert handling of controlsUse of correct road procedureAnticipation of the action of other road users and taking appropriate actionTurning right-hand and left-hand cornersOvertaking, meeting and crossing the path of other vehicles safelySound judgement of distance, speed and timingConsideration for the convenience and safety of other road users
You will also be asked to demonstrate your ability the following manoeuvres:Move away smoothly from rest, to include wherever possible, the ability to move off on reasonably steep uphill and downhill gradientsMoving away at an angle, having pulled up behind a stationary vehicleStopping the vehicle as in an emergencyDriving the vehicle backwards and whilst so doing enter limited openings to the right and leftReverse parking exercise (car park and road)Turning the vehicle around in the road to face the opposite direction
The test lasts 90 minutes and you are only allowed 3 driving faults therefore it is vital that your driving is to a very high standardThere is no theory testing involved and a commentary drive is not expectedThe assessor will tell you the result at the end of the test and give you feedback of any faults recorded You will receive written confirmation of the result along with a report of the testIf you are successful and achieve a Grade A pass mark you will also be sent a certificate
