The Cardington Special Test The Cardington Special Test is only available to Approved Driving Instructors (ADI) and can be used as part of their Continued Professional Development (CPD) to demonstrate that they still have a high standard of driving competence.
This test lasts for 90 minutes and is carried out at the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) Training Centre by one of the specialist DSA training staff and is conducted in the instructor’s own car, which must have manual transmission, an interior instructor mirror and integral head restraints for the driver and assessor.
The test involves driving on all types of road, including a motorway and in a variety of traffic situations. Throughout the drive, ADIs have to demonstrate a positive, courteous attitude and the ability to control the position and speed of the vehicle safely, in a systematic and smooth style. A high consistent standard of driving competence based on concentration, effective observation, anticipation and planning is expected and in particular, you must demonstrate:
expert handling of controls
use of correct road procedure
anticipation of the action of other road users and taking appropriate action
turning right-hand and left-hand corners
overtaking, meeting and crossing the path of other vehicles safely
sound judgement of distance, speed and timing
consideration for the convenience and safety of other road users
You will also be asked to demonstrate your ability the following manoeuvres:
move away smoothly from rest, to include wherever possible, the ability to move off on reasonably steep uphill and downhill gradients
moving away at an angle, having pulled up behind a stationary vehicle
stopping the vehicle as in an emergency
driving the vehicle backwards and whilst so doing enter limited openings to the right and left
reverse parking exercise (car park and road)
turning the vehicle around in the road to face the opposite direction using forward and reverse gears
There is no element of theory testing and a commentary drive is not expected. At the end of the test the assessor will tell you the result and give a brief explanation of any faults recorded. Written confirmation of the result along with a report of the test will be sent to the instructor.
All successful instructors who achieve a Grade A pass mark will also be sent a certificate
IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists) The IAM test is based on the Police "Roadcraft" system of car control and lasts for approximately 90 minutes. The examiner will be either serving or retired police officers who hold the Police Advanced Driving Certificate which is the highest standard that can be achieved. For a police officer to pass that they will have gone on a four week training course and will have to at the end have taken a very tough driving test themselves.
The route will be approximately 35 miles and will take place on a variety of different road and traffic conditions and where possible there will be a section of motorway driving included. Throughout the test the candidate should make safe progress within the posted speed limit and demonstrate a good sound knowledge of "Roadcraft" throughout the test. Also the candidate will have to perform a reverse into a side road and execute a hill start on an uphill gradient. Candidates will not fail for any minor faults but anything of a serious nature will result in a fail.
On passing the IAM test, the candidate will become members and will receive a certificate and other benefits such as cheaper car insurance with participating car insurance companies and can take advantage of other special offers.
RoSPA Royal Society for The Prevention of Accidents Like the IAM test, the RoSPA test is based on the Police "Roadcraft" system of car control and lasts for approximately 90 minutes. The candidate is only allowed to have a maximum of 6 driving faults ( 7 driving faults or 1 serious or dangerous fault will result in fail) The test will take place on a variety of different road and traffic conditions and where possible there will be a section of motorway driving included.
